A Tang suit sample is valuable only when its purpose, specification, and approval criteria are documented before it is made. Decide whether the sample tests fit, fabric, color, workmanship, decoration, packaging, or all of them. A generic showroom piece cannot automatically approve a customized bulk order.
Define the sample type
Ask whether it is an existing stock sample, development sample, fit sample, color sample, pre-production sample, or shipment sample. Record which bulk-production decisions it can approve and which remain open.
Send a version-controlled specification
List fabric, lining, color, collar, closures, sleeves, pockets, vents, motif, labels, packing, and measurements. Attach dated reference images. Ask the supplier to confirm deviations before making the sample rather than quietly substituting materials.
Choose a representative size
Select a size relevant to the customer base and confirm finished-garment measurements. If grading risk is significant, one middle size may not prove the smallest and largest sizes. Ask how patterns change across the range.
Inspect materials and color
Compare composition, weight, hand feel, opacity, sheen, lining, and approved swatches. View color in daylight and intended lighting. Record whether the bulk order must use the same source or dye lot and agree how shade variation will be judged.
Measure construction
Check shoulder, chest, midsection, sleeve, back length, collar, and any trouser measurements using the agreed method. Inspect seam consistency, lining, hems, pockets, frog alignment, reinforcement, loose threads, stains, and symmetry.
Run fit and movement tests
Use the intended base layer. Fasten every closure, sit, reach, raise the arms, walk, and use stairs. For performance or uniform use, test the real movement sequence. Photograph front, side, and back and note pressure or restriction.
Test care cautiously
Follow supplied care instructions and record shrinkage, color change, wrinkling, closure behavior, and surface damage. Do not invent a wash method when the supplier specifies dry cleaning or another limitation.
Approve with written comments
Mark each point approved, rejected, or requiring change. Include photos, measurements, version date, responsible person, and whether a revised sample is necessary. “Approved with comments” must state whether production may start.
Retain a control sample
Keep the signed or sealed approved sample for comparison with bulk goods. Agree who owns samples, shipping costs, revision costs, and what happens if production differs from approval.
